About Mr Hamish Shilton
I am a General Surgeon with international subspecialty training in Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric surgery, including sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. I work across both the public and private healthcare systems, consulting and operating across South East Melbourne and Gippsland.
Training
I completed the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Monash University (MBBS). I trained in General Surgery through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons training program, based at Monash Health, before completing two years of post-fellowship subspecialty training in Upper GI surgery. This began at Auckland City Hospital, New Zealand, working across benign and malignant oesophagogastric surgery, including a major public bariatric surgery service, and continued at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in the UK, within a centralised specialist oesophagogastric cancer service. I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy from the University of Melbourne and am a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) as well as a Fellow of the Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Gastric and Oesophageal Surgical Association fellowship training program (FAANZGOSA).
Hospital appointments and teaching
I hold appointments as a Visiting Medical Officer at Cabrini Hospital and Jessie McPherson Private Hospital, and as a Consultant Upper GI/General Surgeon at Monash Health. I am an Adjunct Lecturer at Monash University and a robotic surgery proctor for Device Technologies (Davinci robot platform). I also contribute specialty oesophagogastric input to the Gippsland Regional Integrated Cancer Services (GRICS) multidisciplinary meetings, as well as attending the Monash Health and Cabrini Health upper GI multidisciplinary cancer meetings.
My approach to patient care
I aim to reduce the uncertainty and anxiety that often come with a medical diagnosis by giving a clear, comprehensive explanation of your condition and treatment options. I strive to answer questions fully, and where there's uncertainty in a diagnosis or likely outcome, I give a transparent, balanced view — including both surgical and non-surgical options. Transparency around fees is also important. I publish my fees as far as practical online as well as on medical costs finder.
For cancer diagnoses, I aim to progress you from diagnosis to treatment as quickly as possible, managed through dedicated upper GI specialist units and multidisciplinary teams.
I have extensive training in minimally invasive surgery and perform procedures laparoscopically or robotically wherever possible. I am one of a small number of surgeons in Australia to have performed a robotic oesophagectomy, and I keep my techniques at the leading edge for managing complex gastric and oesophageal conditions.
I aim to give every patient clear, honest information about their condition and treatment options, so they can make confident decisions about their care.
